Prepare to dance with Zorba jduffey
Updated: 2016-07-30 18:02:11
For eight years, the congregation of St. Thomas the Apostle Orthodox Church has provided the public with a Greek party and celebration of life. This year, the ninth annual Greek Festival will be held Friday through Sunday, September 9-11, 2016, on the parking lot of the church, 4200 S. Holiday Ave., in Springfield.

Its our way of inviting the community to share our enjoyment of Greek cuisine, pastries and drinks, said parish priest Father Andrew Moore. We strive for a party atmosphere where we all share tables under tents and enjoy the music and dancing.

Festival hours are 5 until 10 p.m. on Friday, noon until 10 p.m. on Saturday and noon until 3 p.m. on Sunday. The free event benefits the church with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Billionis Memorial Fund.

Here are highlights of the festival:

  • Dance with the Greeks!

  • Be photographed as a "Greek for a Day

  • Sample Greek cuisine, desserts and pastries.

  • Treat yourself to a baklava sundae.

  • Take home a box of sweets.

  • Visit our Zorbas Taverna.

  • Enjoy ouzo in a souvenir shot glass.

  • Taste Greek coffee in a souvenir cup from the Coffee Ethic.

  • Browse the Agora tent for Greek memorabilia.

  • Bid on silent auction items donated by local vendors.

  • Hear Father Andrew talk about the Orthodox faith in the sanctuary.

  • Let the kids romp in the inflatables.
