Nixa residents can get free weather radios jfinney
Updated: 2016-06-14 15:28:51
Hundreds of people die each year in weather-related events. Being prepared for such disasters can save lives. Thats why the city of Nixa and the Nixa Fire Protection District have partnered together for the third time to help residents be better prepared for severe weather.

Beginning on June 13, 2016,, the city of Nixa and the Nixa Fire Protection District are giving away 100 Midland Weather Alert Radios to residents who have a Nixa address. Unlike previous years, residents do not have to live inside the city limits or be of a certain age, they just need a Nixa address.

During severe weather, a weather radio can save your familys life, said Nixa Fire Protection District Chief Jon Trent. Just like people should have smoke detectors in their homes, everyone should have a weather radio in order to know when severe weather is approaching.

Anyone interested in receiving a weather radio needs to come to Nixa City Hall (715 W. Mt Vernon) to retrieve a voucher. The voucher can be redeemed at the Nixa Fire Protection District Headquarters located at 301 S. Nicholas Road where someone with the Nixa Fire Protection District will program the radios free of charge.

Having a weather radio inside your home allows you to act before hazardous weather strikes, said Nixa Mayor Brian Steele. The more we can get into homes of Nixa residents, the better.

When programmed correctly, weather radios only alert owners of impending weather in that particular area. Many people rely on tornado sirens to alert them to bad weather, however, tornado sirens are only meant to be heard outdoors even though some people can still hear them inside.

You really dont want to rely on those sirens, says Trent. If you have a weather alert radio, there is no doubt you will know when severe weather is imminent.

The Midland Weather Alert Radios were purchased at cost with funds from a grant received from the Nixa Walmart (Walmart Foundation).

The vouchers will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis during Nixa City Hall business hours: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Those wishing to receive one need to bring a photo identification with current address. Only one radio will be given out per household.
